Voodoo Superstitions And Spells

Many superstitions also related to the practice of Hoodoo developed within the Voodoo tradition in Louisiana. While these superstitions are not central to the Voodoo faith, their appearance is partly a result of Voodoo tradition in New Orleans and have since influenced it significantly.

* You can harm a person in whatever way you want to by getting a lock of his hair and burning some and throwing the rest away.
* You can make a farmer's well go dry by putting some soda in the well for one week, each day; then drawing a bucket of water out and throwing it in the river to make the well go dry.

In Voodoo spells, the "cure-all" was very popular among followers. The cure-all was a Voodoo spell that could solve all problems. Voodoo Doll Making Instructions

Voodoo dolls are created to place a spell on an individual that is intended to bring them good fortune, love or fulfillment or to place a hex or curse on someone. Whatever the reasoning, the history of the voodoo doll is steeped in African culture brought to the Americas and spread to New Orleans, where it is said these types of "voodoo" dolls originated as a corruption of the original "Voudun" spirit religion. Instructions:

# Step 1

Make a lower case "t" shape by tying two sticks together with a piece of twine.

# Step 2

Spray glue onto the sticks and cover them with dried moss, which can be purchased at most craft stores. You can cover the sticks with one large piece of moss or place smaller pieces all over the sticks.

# Step 3

Tie down the moss covered sticks with a few pieces of twine to help keep the moss from coming loose.

# Step 4

Wrap the moss-covered sticks with wide ribbon of your choosing. Begin near the top of the sticks and wrap it completely down, securing the bottom with a pin. Wrap ribbon around the "arms" and secure with pins. Make sure to leave the ends of both sticks uncovered. This will represent the hair, feet and hands of the doll.

# Step 5

Place buttons on the face of the doll, two for the eyes and one for the mouth. You can either sew them onto the face with a needle and thread or utilize hot glue.

# Step 6

Cover the voodoo doll with any other embellishments you choose, such as multicolored ribbons, feathers and more buttons.

# Step 7

Place one or more pins into the doll in the "heart" area according to the desired effect. Each of seven different colored pins represent different outcomes. The seven pin colors and their symbols are red for power, black for negative energies or to reject them, white for positive energies, yellow for success, purple for spirituality, blue for love and green for money.

How To Make A Yarn Voodoo Doll

Voodoo dolls are fun to make. One of the cutest styles of voodoo dolls is the yarn voodoo doll. With a few simple materials and a little time, you can create yarn voodoo dolls that will make unique gifts..

Instructions

# Step 1

Cut a piece of yarn for a tie. It should be six inches long. Place the yarn along the top edge of your largest piece of cardboard. Wind yarn of the same color around the piece of cardboard vertically. Wind the yarn 200 hundred times to achieve the proper thickness, then slip the wound yarn off the cardboard and use the single piece of yarn to tie off the wound yarn. Make sure to tie the single piece of yarn tight. This will be the body of the doll.

# Step 2

Make a yarn ball one inch in diameter from the same color yarn as you used for the body.

# Step 3

Wind yarn around the nine-inch piece of cardboard about fifty times. Remove the yarn from the cardboard and cut along the bottom bend of the yarn. Tie together one end of the yarn, about 1/2" from the edge. Braid the yarn and tie the other end, again 1/2" from the end of the wound yarn strip. These are the arms.

# Step 4

Place the previously made yarn ball into the yarn body under the tied center, smooth the yarn out around the yarn ball, and twist and tie the yarn to form the head.

# Step 5

Slide the long nine-inch tied arm piece horizontally through the yarn body and center it. Tie the yarn together below each of the arms for support.

# Step 6

Gather the remaining yarn, separate it into two sections, braid and tie each section 1/4" from the ends. This will be the legs of the voodoo doll.

# Step 7

Use the yarn you chose for hair color. Place a four inch piece of yarn across the smallest piece of cardboard and wind the rest of the yarn vertically, fifty times, the same as you did for the body. Slide the yarn from the cardboard and tie it tightly with the four inch string of yarn. Place the hair on top of the head and stitch in place with embroidery floss, keeping the stitch hidden beneath the hair. Run a stitch along the neckline to further secure the hair.

# Step 8

Use small buttons for the eyes, nose and mouth. Stitch or glue them in place.

# Step 9

Finish your voodoo yarn doll with seven colored pins, each of which represents something specific in the voodoo culture. The pin heads should be colored yellow (success), white (positive energy), red (power), purple (spirituality), green (money), blue (love) and black (repelling negative energy). Display your voodoo yarn doll with the pins randomly placed and with pride.

How To Make A Wax Voodoo Doll

Voodoo dolls suffer from a maligned reputation, thanks to the overheated notions of Hollywood movies. In truth, the practice of using voodoo dolls arose fairly recently--in New Orleans--and voodoo dolls can serve benign functions as well as malignant ones. Pins of different colors can be placed in them to trigger romance, financial windfalls and similar acts of good fortune. You can create a voodoo doll out of cloth, moss or other forms of stuffing, but a wax voodoo doll is inexpensive and holds pins extremely well. 1.

Instructions:

1. Step 1

Tie two pieces of wood together with a piece of twine to form a cross. Traditionally, the process required twigs from local trees, but you can use any wood that's handy. This forms the basic structure of the doll.

2. Step 2

Apply sculpting wax to the wood, then mold and shape it into a basic human form. The wax should be easy to mold by using the heat of your hands to soften it.

3. Step 3

Insert a small item with a personal connection to the person you want the voodoo doll to represent. It can be a small charm or trinket, a lock of hair, or even a coin that the person carried. Embed it in the wax as you sculpt so it doesn't stick out. This step is optional, but it increases the potency of the voodoo doll.

4. Step 4

Wait for the wax to dry, then wrap it in fabric. Form the fabric into an "X" shape around the torso and secure it with a ribbon. How To Make Voodoo Dolls At Home

Voodoo dolls are often found in shops in New Orleans and other areas of the world where the art is still practiced. A voodoo doll can make an interesting decorative item and an unusual or funny gift. A basic voodoo doll is easy to make, and the process can be refined to make the doll similar to a particular person. Voodoo dolls can be as plain or elaborate as the designer likes.

Instructions

1.Step 1

Place the sticks in the shape of a cross using a longer stick for the body and a shorter stick for the arms. Tie the sticks together with string. You can substitute wooden dowels or other craft-type wood pieces for the sticks.

2. Step 2

Tightly wrap Spanish moss around the sticks to form the mass of the doll's body. Try to use a single attached piece of moss for the entire doll. If necessary, secure the moss with string when you are done.

3. Step 3

Wrap fabric scraps around the moss, leaving a bit of moss sticking out at the top and bottom of the doll. Either sew or glue the fabric to secure it. For the best effect, use one solid color of scraps for this step. White, black and tan are good colors for the base covering of the doll.

Sew or glue the beads in place for the eyes. If you want your doll to have a mouth, use another bead, a button or other sewing embellishment.

5. Step 5

Use different colors of fabric to create clothes for your doll. Wrap the fabric around the doll to create skirts, dresses, shirts and other clothing, leaving the solid color scraps for the doll's base body color. Sew or glue the fabric to secure it. Add jewelry, purses and other objects to make your voodoo doll more elaborate.

6. Step 6

Push the straight pins through the doll in different locations, and your doll is ready for display or a gift box.

How To Learn Voodoo Magic

Voodoo is a faith that is a combination of Roman Catholicism and the tribal spiritualism of West Africa. When the slaves (primarily in Haiti) were taught Christianity, it blended with their own spiritualism and became what's known as voodoo. While a complicated faith to an outsider, voodoo can be learned and understood. Additionally, the inherent magic of voodoo can also be performed if a person learns it.


How to Learn Voodoo Magic Instructions

Step 1. Learn about voodoo as a religion and faith. Voodoo is a religion first and a form of magic second. One cannot practice the magic until they learn about the spirits, called the Loa, who grant this power and aid.

Step 2. Find an experienced teacher, if possible. Voodoo is like any other faith; you can read all the books that you want, but in the end you should speak with other practitioners about it to learn from their experience.

Step 3. Design a ritual. Voodoo, like any other faith, is symbolic. However, that doesn't mean that voodoo spells are created like a recipe. There isn't a "speak these words, perform this action" sort of formula to voodoo magic. Rituals represent a spell, and they should be unique to each person. For instance, a love spell could call out to a certain Loa for help, and while you speak a poem that you wrote yourself, you could light red candles to represent love and power. How To Do White Magic To Remove Voodoo Harm

First and foremost, it's important to remember that voodoo is a religion first. Most voodoo practitioners frown upon the use of spells of any kind. White magic is most often associated with wicca or witchcraft, another religion. The closest thing voodoo offers to "white magic" as popularly perceived are protective charms. 3. Step 3

Light a lamp for the lwa. A magical lamp is a charm. The lamp can be blessed by the ougan or mambo. The lamps usually have a specific goal to protect, to bless, to treat or to ensure health. The lamp can be made from a number of different sources, such as a bowl, jug, coconut shell or bottle. The container is filled with oil, and a wick is threaded through it. The ougan adds special herbs and prayers. You light the lamp to invoke the magic and the blessings of the lwa.

4. Step 4

Pray to the Catholic saints. Much of voodoo is associated with the Catholic saints. If you fear the harm done by negative energy, extend positive energy to the world through the intermediaries such as the saints. Performing specific prayers to the saints can promote White Magic and positive energy to undo the harm of black magic.

5. Step 5

Pray to the lwa. These white slips of paper are called oraison. They can be purchased in street markets in New Orleans and Port au Prince. The oraison can be sewn into pillows or clothes to carry good wishes and positive magic into every part of life following a pay-it-forward theory.

How To Dispose Of A Cursed Voodoo Doll

So you think you have a Voodoo doll that has been cursed, or you feel it is haunted and is bringing you bad luck? What do you do with it? Well, there are a couple of options and lucky for you that I am sharing it here!

If you really feel that you have somehow acquired a negative Voodoo doll, the best thing to do is to put it in a white cloth and shake a whole lot of sea salt on it. Sea salt is routinely used as a purifier in magick. Then, take it to a river or stream or somewhere deep in the woods with an offering of fruit and some coins. Ask the spirits of the water or the trees to take the negative energy and transform it through the power of the earth. Leave the area without looking back and when you arrive home light a 7-day protection candle and take a bath with cleansing herbs, including sea salt. Basil and juniper are two good options for this type of cleansing spiritual bath.

Another option is to wait until a Saturday to get rid of it. Put the doll in a clean, white cloth and dig a hole in the ground somewhere far away from your home. Place the doll in the hole and burn it. When it has reduced to ashes, sprinkle some Holy Water on it and cover the hole over with dirt. The earth will transform that negative energy very quickly and turn it into positive energy and blessings. When you return home afterward, bathe very well, adding some Holy Water to your bath.

Don't know where to get Holy Water? I'll tell you an old Indian secret. Take a glass of ordinary water and place it in the east window of your home. In the morning as the sun shines on the water, it will be transformed into Holy Water.

New Orleans Voodoo Magic

New Orleans is stock full of folk tales of Voodoo Practitioners who can transform into animals or cause animals to invade others. Rather than transforming into wolves, the Voodouns are generally reported as becoming cats.

As late as the 1940’s, stories of frogs, snakes, lizards and snails inside the bodies of the cursed flooded New Orleans. Family members’ bearing witness to these creatures expelling from the bodies and then disappearing shrouded numerous cases of unexplained deaths. In Jim Haskin’s book, “Voodoo and Hoodoo”, the author records actual spells that were supposedly used to invoke living creatures in the body. The spells usually involved the blood of the creature or a powder made from the dead creature being introduced into the food of the intended victim. Once ingested, the victim proceeds to grow living creatures in the stomach, veins or under the skin. Needless to say, there were spells for casting out living creatures in the body as well. Herbs were generally used to cleanse the body and drive away any living creatures that may have been inflicted!

One can only assume that much of the legends that have arisen in New Orleans were spawned by fear and superstition. It is human nature to fear what we do not understand. Voodoo could be perhaps, one of the most misunderstood Religions that have ever existed. Its presence in New Orleans has brought with it a veil of mysticism that has shrouded our fair city and confused its onlookers. The magical history and folklore of New Orleans even inspired local best selling author, Anne Rice, to produce a string of novels about a family of witches, The Mayfair’s. No matter what one’s opinion may be of Voodoo and Witchcraft, no one can come to New Orleans and not be curious as to its wonder.

The roots of Voodoo have been traced all the way back to Africa before 1100 AD. In his book, A Brief History of Voodoo: Slavery & the Survival of The African Gods, Mr. Andy Antippas gives an overview of this fascinating history. The Yoruba people of Southwestern and eastern Dahomey and Togo/Nigeria founded a great city called Ife. It is from the religious beliefs of Ife that Voodoo as we know it today has evolved.

The Voodoo religion is based on one main supreme deity and several demi-gods called loas or lwas. The loas are much to Voodoo as the Saints are to Catholicism. Each one serving a specific purpose. It is estimated that by the 1750’s, 30,000 slaves a year were being immigrated into Haiti bringing with them the Voodoo religion. In the language of the Dahomey tribes, the word Voodoo means Gods or Spirits. The Dahomians believed that these spirits had the ability to enter the worshippers. This was believed to be a valuable experience, warding off illness and misfortune.

Book: Santeria African Magic In Latin America by Migene Gonzalez Wippier

This is a fascinating book about the author's personal Experiences with Santeria. I have read many of Ms Gonzalez-Wippler's books on the subject and this is one of the best and most famous. There seems to be a great deal of resentment towards this author's work on Santeria mostly because she has been the most popular writer on the religion. As an intiate in the Religion and an educator, I consider her work ground breaking because she was the first to identify the orishas as archetypes of the collective unconscious. She was also the first to write about it in the English language. Her books are used as required reading in universities around the world.Most of the "negative" reviews about her seem to come from the same people. The same names keep coming up in the comments about her work. This is a sad commentary on the people who claim to love and practice Santeria and they should know better.

If you want to learn about the religion called Santeria that is practiced and followed in various forms by 100 million people in the Americas, Gonzalez-Wippler's book is a good place to start. In plain language easy for the layman to comprehend, Gonzalez writes about the history of Santeria, its roots in both African religion and Roman Catholicism (Santeria is a syncretism of both), the Santeria pantheon, Magical Practices and magical spells. She also writes a separate chapter on brujeria, or witchcraft, a malignant offshoot of Santeria but distinctly separate from it. Gonzalez relates how many herbal spells used in Santeria have beneficial medicinal properties, such as the herb higuereta which has been found to shrink malignant tumors, and she also discusses the mindset of those who follow both Santeria and Catholicsm and have no problem integrating both into their lives, since each serves its own purpose. The book doesn't go into great depths, but it's an excellent overview for those who want to explore more deeply into the religion and its beliefs and practices. It also has the advantage of being written in English originally, so that it doesn't risk losing anything in translation. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in Comparative religions and/or the history and culture of Latin America.

At first glance, this issue may appear to be a departure from our previous offerings. William S. Burroughs has long been and continues to be, though somewhat softened by time, a controversial figure. His life and theories remain kewl and are still discovered by successive younger generations. To a large extent Burroughs is talked about but not discussed. He has become another larger than life pop icon—all be it one that retains the potential to be both edgy and disruptive. Key quotes and his larger Theoretical constructs are discussed in academic, literate and specialized circles. Few, however, actually peer beneath the hood and attempt to figure out the moving parts in his engine of genius. Even fewer have looked at his theories in a spiritual, or more appropriately a magical, context. At the center of his work, especially from The Wild Boys forward, is a grappling with his reality of a magical universe populated by diverse gods and multiple zones beyond the control of the terrestrial material world.

Would it surprise one that Burroughs wrote often of drugs, control systems and communication? Probably not. Would it surprise the casual fan that he believed in a magical universe, felt affinity with the Egyptian notion of seven souls and was an initiated Chaos magician at the time of his death? Quite possibly. Burroughs’ later writing is infused with complex episodes and examinations of the magical universe, the importance of dream space, the travels of the soul After Death and the power of magick. His characters conduct postmodern rituals from the wild boy tribes’ unigenesis to his hard-boiled detective’s occult investigative techniques. Sometimes spiritual gnosis is a lambent flame warming the seeker with the careful time-honed glow of wisdom and sometimes spiritual metamorphosis is a blast furnace reducing the old to ash. Much of the work contained in this feature would fit the latter more than the former. Some may find portions of this material disturbing or offensive. There is currently a notion circulating in scientific research circles that high risk holds the potential for high gain. There are those who have reached the determination that the

Casting Hexes Curses Black Magic And Voodoo

It's a problem encountered time and again: an inexperienced person, finding themselves with the need to cast black magic, makes an attempt to ask to more experienced pagans how to do so only to be turned away by fluffy-bunny new-agers ranting about "karma" and "the rule of three."

There is good news for those in the market to cast harmful Black Magic Spells but still lacking the know-how. The fact is, not all magic is of a religious nature. Much traditional folk magic and witchcraft spells were devised for use outside of religion, particularly in areas where the mainstream churches disapproved of such practices. Indeed, in a world of free religious choice, there is no reason a person can't be allowed to perform "evil" black magic spells if they so desire.

The aspiring spellcaster made of strong stuff can still fight the fight and try to ask for first-hand information amongst the Pagan Community, hoping to find real spells. However, the type of person who requires revenge spells in the first place is often a person whose feelings are easily hurt; as such, the ill-treatment they receive from the people they go to for magickal help merely enhances their desire for such harmful magic. Quite counter-productive!

Those who wish to avoid judgments and scoldings, then, are advised to turn to the helpful world of occult books.

One of the latest spellbooks with real spells focused on the subject of harmful black magic is Death and Destruction: How to Cast Magic Spells for Vengeance, Harm, &c. It is designed with practitioners of modern hoodoo folk magic in mind. As a result, it does occasionally make references to Christianity and its beliefs, but does not particularly expect the reader to follow them. The spells tend toward religiously neutral witchcraft, and often make use of popular conjure formulas with names like Crossing Powder, Revenge Oil, Zula Zula, and Goofer Dust available from botanicas, candle stores and curio shops.

The following is an example of one of the more than forty real spells the book provides, used here with permission of the author:

To Ruin the Happiness of Your Spell-Target

Bottle or Jar
Paper with enemy's name written 9 times
Goofer Dust
Black Salt
Red Wine Vinegar

Begin by rubbing the name-paper thoroughly with Goofer Dust, while cursing your enemy. Shake off the paper, and place it into the jar.
Fill the jar a portion of the way with Black Salt, and say "__(name)__, this destroys your luck." Then top it off with the Red Wine Vinegar, and say, "__(name)__, this sours your fortune." Tightly cap the jar, and give it a thorough shaking: the contents will combine into a black sludge. Dispose of the jar in a graveyard.

The fact is that we live in a golden age for spellcasters. No more are magic spell books printed at the mercy of what a publisher imagines will be popular or acceptable to a mainstream pagan market. New print-on-demand technology has allowed many authors to release their spell books to the public. Death and Destruction is a shining example of this, and is sure to benefit those who purchase it.
